NEW YORK (MYFOXNY) -

The MTA restored Metro-North train service in and out of Grand Central Terminal Wednesday evening. Earlier, the gas explosion in East Harlem caused a service suspension because the tracks on the Park Avenue viaduct were littered with debris from the blast.

After getting the OK from police and fire officials, Metro-North crews began clearing the debris and structural engineers checked the safety of the elevated tracks. (Video from SkyFoxHD showed crews beginning to remove debris from the tracks at about 2 p.m.)

"Metro-North structural engineers have verified the integrity of the Park Avenue elevated structure," the MTA said in a statement. "And all four tracks have been restored to service after being cleared of debris, inspected for track and third rail integrity and approved for operations by Metro-North and the New York City Fire Department."

The MTA said commuters should expect delays and crowding. Trains will run at slower speeds when passing through the explosion site to "protect nearby employees and reduce vibrations as rescue and recovery work continues."

It appears the subway bedbug problem we've been reporting is getting worse. Commuters already have to contend with sweltering platforms, scurrying rats and packed train cars, and now there's another transit woe: fear of bedbugs.

Heavy thunderstorms swept through the tri-state on Sunday causing flash floods and lightning strikes that injured 3 people. The three men were struck at Orchard Beach in the Bronx Sunday afternoon and were being treated at a local hospital. Meanwhile, various Labor Day weekend celebrations were interrupted, delayed and even canceled as the U.S. Open tennis tournament had to be postponed and the Electric Zoo musical festival on Randall's Island had to be prematurely shut down.
