MEMPHIS, Tenn. (FOX13) -

There's a proven connection between access to books in the home at an early age and academic performance.

The Word Church is hosting a literacy campaign to put books in as many homes in Memphis as possible.

Putting books in hands of children can change the world. It can start right in Memphis with the help of The Word Church, which is hosting a big children book drive to do just that.

"We've got to invest in our children and we want to invest in the future," said Aaron Litzey, The Word Church pastor. "One of the key ways is starting when they are young, by providing the opportunity to have access to books and all the imagination they open up, that books provide for the opportunities books for them to achieve at high levels. That's what we want to do."

Over 1,000 childrens books were given away this past weekend and they still got another 2,000 to give away. They are looking for more.

"As an educator we want to make some connections because in the inner city, children are really pushed down by the low rates of literacy," said Litzey. "So we connected with Feed the Children and a couple of other agencies that really are committed to providing hope to children who are hit by these hard economic times."

The Word Church plans to make its literacy campaign an ongoing effort.
