JACKSON, Ga. -

The Butts County teen accused of beating his grandmother to death with a baseball bat appeared before a judge Thursday.

Even veteran prosecutors were stunned when they heard the case against 18-year-old JeNorman Bland. Butts County District Attorney Richard Milam called the case "especially horrendous and grotesque".

Investigators have accused Bland of beating his 60-year-old grandmother, Glenda Woodard, to death with an aluminum baseball bat.

"He asked her to take him to the store. She refused because she had to go to work and the assault ended up happening," said Butts County Sheriff Gary Long.

The sheriff says Bland wanted cigars. The Jackson High School senior is now being charged with Felony Murder.

Many members of his family were openly upset during Thursday's hearing. His father sat on the first row. His mother, the victim's daughter, chose not to attend.

"You have the family of the victim and the family of the defendant are the same people. All you can hope for is that that never happens to your family," said Butts County District Attorney Richard Milam.

Milam said the evidence against Bland is "well gathered" and includes the murder weapon. He said that cased like this are more common that one might think.

"A young man killing somebody that he otherwise should have loved. I'm afraid I have seen that way too many time," said Milam.

For the Bland and Woodard families, the pain of this domestic murder is their reality. After court, family members said they didn't want to talk to reporters about their heartache.
