R-word: Spread the Word to End the Word

Posted: Updated:
CHICAGO (FOX 32 News) -

The Special Olympics is all about giving everyone the chance to compete and do their best.

However, it's also about making the world see who the people with intellectual and developmental disabilities really are. At heart, they're just like everyone else.

The Special Olympics and Best Buddies charity are promoting the elimination of the frequent, and insensitive use of the R-word.

The R-word stands for "retard" or "retarded."

The use of the R-word is said to be damaging because it labels someone as something. The mission of the Special Olympics and Best Buddies charity is to accept and include people, as well as give them the same opportunities as anyone else. Labeling someone with the R-word doesn't help their mission.

Spread the Word to End the Word was started by two college students. They noticed the derogatory use of the word in popular culture and wanted to point out that the common use of it is wrong.
