Man left with nothing when contractor clears out wrong apartment

NEW YORK (MYFOXNY) -

A New York man came home to an empty apartment after a clean up crew went into the wrong apartment and threw out almost all of his belongings.

"My initial reaction was shock," Nilay Shroff says.

Shroff lives in apartment 2D of a building on E. 74th St. on the Upper East Side. She says he went to work at 8 a.m. and came home at 7 p.m. with groceries in hand to find everything gone.

A clean-out crew had been contracted to clean out the belongings of apartment 2B but somehow ended up in the wrong unit.

"I thought I'd been robbed," Shroff told Fox 5 News. Inexplicable, the only thing they left behind was his flat-screen TV and his Playstation 3.

They even took his dirty dishes out of the sink and threw them away.

A crew had been contracted by the management company to clean out the belongings left behind by someone who was no longer living in the building. The building management is putting the blame on the contractor, who was not insured, Shroff says.

Along with all of his furniture, clothes and passport being sent to the dump, Shroff says he lost almost all of his photos of his late mother.

Shroff is suing the management company, Mautner-Glick, his landlord and the contractor. He estimates that he lost around $40,000 in his belongings.

"The actual story is too bizarre to believe," Shroff says.

Making New York City more energy efficient

More than half the population of New York City rides public transportation to work. No other metropolis in this country even approaches that percentage or the MTA's total number of riders. For that reason, New York likely ranks as the most energy-efficient city in the nation. But what would it take to make the city even more energy-efficient or even self-sufficient?
