WASHINGTON (FOX 13) - -

Monday, the U.S. Supreme Court added five new cases to its schedule including one from an Arkansas man regarding the constitutionality of beards in prison.

What separated this petition from others was that it was handwritten by an inmate at Varner Supermax prison in Gould serving a life sentence.

Gregory Holt, who now prefers to be called Abdul Malik Muhammed, was convicted in June 2010 of cutting his girlfriend's throat and stabbing her in the chest.

Holt says the prison's policy of requiring inmates to be clean shaven violates his religious freedom as a Muslim.
