MINNEAPOLIS (KMSP) -

The Dalai Lama visited the Twin Cities on Sunday to celebrate the Tibetan New Year.

About 3,000 Tibetan-Americans from across the country packed an auditorium Sunday morning at Augsburg College in Minneapolis to celebrate the holiday with the Buddhist spiritual leader. He spoke at Macalester College in St. Paul on Sunday afternoon.

This visit marks the first time the Dalai Lama has celebrated Losar outside of India since his exile. After the ceremony, he headed to a private event.

The spiritual leader of the Tibetan people was selected as the rebirth of the 13th Dalai Lama when he was just 2. Now in his late 70s, he continues to spread the word that compassion is the key to a happy life.

The speech he gave focused on violence and its role in the 20th century, adding that he hopes face-to-face reconciliation through dialogue will be the hallmark of the 21st century.

The Dalai Lama also spoke at the Nobel Peace Prize Forum in Minneapolis Saturday. He said the materialistic culture of modern society has caused humans' good qualities to go dormant. He said ethics and human values need to be taught in school because the education system is oriented toward material values.

The Dalai Lama won the Nobel Peace Prize in 1989. He last visited the Twin Cities in 2011.
