DOWNTOWN MEMPHIS, Tenn. (FOX13) -

There were many updates at the Downtown Memphis Commission's meeting on Friday. Everyone there was eager to hear the latest on what they've got planned for Beale Street.

"We've got St. Patty's Day coming up the AAC tournament, Beale Street will be packed," said Paul Morris, President of the Downtown Memphis Commission. "We want downtown to be filled with people and it will be."

The commission has been running the day to day operations of Beale Street for two months now. Morris says Beale Street cannot be taken for granted and it requires 24-hours-a-day management.

"Collection of the rent, taking out the trash, events security, fixing roofs, all the day to day things that need to happen for it to operate," said Morris.

FOX13 News also got an update on the Main to Main Street connector project. It's a plan to fix and make North Main Street look better and be more effective for residents and businesses.

"Sidewalks are being installed," Morris said. "We are building new roadways. So, basically it's being improved all through the Main Street Mall area, and the best part is it's zero tax payer dollars."

Morris admits the transition to managing Beale Street was a tough one, but he's says now things are moving full steam ahead, with even bigger plans ahead.

"We've got to get Memphians reintroduced to Beale Street and make our asset, not just a tourist asset," he said.
