CORINTH, Miss. (FOX13) -

Was a north Mississippi man fatally stabbed for doing the right thing?

Corinth Police Capt. Ralph Dance said 43-year-old Greg Scott he was killed while investigating some suspicious behavior in his neighborhood. Capt. Dance said Mr. Scott ran outside when he heard the sound of glass breaking at a neighbor's house.

His neighbors said Mr Scot was the kind of guy who watched out for everyone.

"We received a 9-1-1 call from a young lady at 206 Nelson Street that there was somebody breaking into her car," Capt. Dance said. "Officers responded to the scene and when they exited they heard a woman screaming at 302 Nelson, and they made entry they found the victim lying on the floor."

Lying on the floor dying was Mr. Scott, who identified the suspect. Police said the suspect lived just around the corner.

"When they got into the suspect's yard as they approached he came out and said, 'I did it! I confess,'" Capt. Dance said. "At that point we took him into custody and we found the weapon covered in blood. It was a butcher knife with about an 8-inch blade on it."

Charged with murder and felony mischief in the case is 59-year-old Jerry Dale Miller. Corinth Police allege Mr. Scott confronted Miller while the suspect was breaking out the windows of cars belonging to two young ladies who lived next door.

That's when they say Miller stabbed Mr. Scott in the chest with the butcher knife.

"The suspect had been drinking and he said he was on some kind of medication," Capt. Dance said. "There may have been some kind of infatuation with one of the girls in the house. We are not sure, but he apparently had approached one of these girls about dating him and she had refused him."

Neighbors are calling Mr. Scott a hero and speaking out about his love for others.

"Says the greatest love is to lay down your life for a friend," said Lance, neighbor. "I think Greg was probably one of the best neighbors a friend could ever have."

"I think this guy was just trying to do the right thing and he lost his life because of it," Capt. Dance added.

"I think Greg took being a neighbor to heart," Lance added. "I think he took that scripture to heart about protecting neighbors and loving them first that is what he done."

Miller was supposed to have his arraignment in court Friday and is facing a $500,000 bond on the murder charge and a $10,000 bond on felony mischief.
