GROSSE ISLE, Mich. (WJBK) -

A fire at a Grosse Ile condominium complex claimed the life of an 86-year-old woman Thursday morning.

Fire officials believe the fire started on a lower level in a neighboring condo unit at the Hawthorne Condominium Complex. The unit is owned by a couple currently in Florida. The fire then spread to Helen Brick's unit.

Brick's family tells FOX 2's Maurielle Lue she lived alone and recently broken her hip, and did not make it out of the house. She died in her living room chair.

She suffered from Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease, or COPD, and had several oxygen tanks in the house and garage. Fire officials have not said if the tanks fueled the fire, but her family believes they may have.

The smoke from the fire was so intense nearby Meridian Elementary School was closed for the day, and doors were left open to air out the building.
