Officials urge caution amid another round of bitter cold weather

Posted: Updated:

LANSING, Mich. -- People in Michigan should take precautions in the coming days as another round of bitterly cold weather settles in across the state, officials said Wednesday.

The warning is from the Michigan State Police's Emergency Management and Homeland Security Division. Colder weather is moving into the state, with readings of 10 below zero already in the Upper Peninsula communities of Sault Ste. Marie and Iron Mountain.

Watches, Warnings and Alerts

"As we deal with another round of extremely cold and potentially life-threatening temperatures, citizens and visitors are encouraged to take extra precautions," Capt. Chris A. Kelenske, deputy state director of Emergency Management and Homeland Security, said in a statement.

"We will be working with our local emergency management partners to ensure the public's health and safety."

The Weather Authority said temperatures would reach around zero degrees in many other parts of the state and wind chills at 20 below or colder through Sunday. The western Lower Peninsula and parts of the Upper Peninsula could get several inches of snow.

Exposure to those temperatures could potentially cause frostbite and hypothermia, as well as create hazardous driving conditions and cause frozen pipes.

State officials are urging people to stay indoors if possible, and those who must go outside are urged to wear protective gear such as coats, hats, mittens and gloves. They're also asking people to check on family, friends and neighbors who may need assistance in the cold.
