City Council won't have official presence at St. Patrick's Day Parade

Posted: Updated:

The fight over LGBT members of the community marching in the St. Patrick's Day Parade in New York City is not a new one, but now top city officials are drawing a political line.

City Council Speaker Melissa Mark-Viverito announced that the City Council will boycott this year's St. Patrick's Day parade. Individual council members will be free to march in the parade, but not in an official capacity with any type of official banner.

The council speaker, Mayor Bill de Blasio, and other top city officials say they'll sit out the event, as long as gay and lesbians cannot openly march.

This has happened in the past.

Some city leaders have even taken their objections a step further, such as City Council Member Jimmy Van Bramer, who is openly gay, and was arrested protesting the parade in 2000.

Not all agree.

The president of the Catholic League, Bill Donahue, called the council speaker's boycott "censorship" and that "What these activists want is the right to impose their agenda on Irish Catholics, neutering a day set aside to honor St. Patrick."

So far organizers of the parade have not commented on the issue.
