BELLWOOD, Ill. (Sun-Times Media Wire) -

A man was killed and his elderly mother injured in a fire in their home in west suburban Bellwood on Monday afternoon.

The fire began in the home in the 300 block of 50th Avenue in Bellwood at 3:35 p.m., Bellwood Director of Public Safety Andre Harvey said.

Otis Green, 68, who lived in the home, was pronounced dead at the scene at 4:07 p.m., according to the Cook County Medical Examiner's office.

An autopsy Tuesday found he died of heart disease and thermal injuries due to the fire, a result of careless use of smoking materials, according to the medical examiner's office. His death was ruled an accident.

Green's 87-year-old mother was injured in the fire and hospitalized in fair condition, Harvey said.

The fire was extinguished about 4:10 p.m., Harvey said. The home sustained moderate smoke damage.

Harvey said the blaze is thought to be accidental, but the exact cause remains under investigation.
