MEMPHIS, Tenn. (FOX13) - -

It's an annual event that brings smiles to people of all ages. That's right! The Shriners Circus is in town this weekend at the Agricenter. Because of the snowy weather in New York, they had to cancel a show and are here a couple days early. FOX13's Earle Farrell caught up with the crew for a Q & A session.

FOX 13's Reporter, Earle Farrell: What do the elephants think about the snow?

Shriner, Jimmy Norman: They like it about as much as me. They don't…ha ha. "I was down at 13 this morning and Joey has got the weather lined up for us. It seems like the weather is going to be cooperating. Between Joey and the good Lord maybe we will have good weather…ha ha.

FOX 13's Reporter, Earle Farrell: Here's something you might not know about elephants. These are the last of an era. Not since President Nixon was in office have elephants been allowed to be imported into the U.S.

Shriner's Circus Elephant Trainer: "The last group of elephants to come into the U.S. legally was in 1972. So, they have all been trained by people over here. They are an endangered species and any elephants brought over have been here since 1972.

FOX 13's Reporter, Earle Farrell: Because they banned the export or import?

Shriner's Circus Elephant Trainer: The import.

FOX 13's Reporter, Earle Farrell: Now why would they do that?

Shriner's Circus Elephant Trainer: That was back when the ivory trade was really big and they were trying to cut down on the killing of elephants. But, all it did was make it worse. Honestly.

FOX 13's Reporter, Earle Farrell: Next question, how much do they weigh?

Shriner's Circus Elephant Trainer: "That's Viola over there and that's Kelly on the other side. (see picture)

FOX 13's Reporter, Earle Farrell: What's Viola like?

Shriner's Circus Elephant Trainer: She is the matriarch of the family she is the biggest. She is 11,600 pounds.

FOX 13's Reporter, Earle Farrell: "If you feel kinda large you know, and you want to feel slimmer, just come down to the circus and stand next to one of these big pachyderms. Makes you feel slender."

You can meet Isa and the other ladies beginning Thursday when the rest of the circus arrives. Click here for ticket information and show times.
