A Neighborhood Is Outraged By What Children Found In A Park Near Their School

Posted: Updated:

Junior high school boys got a little too curious and a tad too playful when they spotted some syringes in their local park.

Needles, needles everywhere.

In fact, the needles were even outside an elementary school where children walk and play every day, according to residents.

"A lot of little kids. Everybody that goes to the surrounding schools walks up and down that road all the time," said neighborhood resident Nick Gebel.

The kids allegedly played with the needles until one student was stuck with a needle. He was then rushed to a doctor to be tested after telling his parents a few days later.

While this story takes place far away in Rolla, Missouri, it is reminiscent of Kensington, Philadelphia's own "needle park" that has just recently been cleaned up.

Kensington's needle park, which was filled with drug addicts, drug overdoses and, even worse, drug user's dirty needles, has just recently been revamped with the help of police and residents.

In Rolla, police are testing needles for DNA in hopes of catching perpetrators of the reckless crime and urge that those who come in contact with the needles call the police immediately or carefully contain the item in a water bottle, avoiding direct contact with the needle.

"Some of the dangers obviously are with a dirty needle, what was it used for, if it was used for heroin, meth, if a person had AIDS that used it, and other types of blood borne diseases, so that`s always a concern," said Chief Mark Kearse of the Rolla Police Department.

The presence of drug use in children's space is an ongoing problem that requires action from both the police and the residents of the neighborhood.

Those in Rolla, much like Kensington residents, are always urged to contact the police when they see or come in contact with events that can endanger the health of others.
