BINGHAMPTON, Tenn. (FOX13) -

A man is dead, shot overnight in Binghampton.

Memphis police were on the scene of the shooting for most of the morning.

One person was killed when shots were fired on Hillcrest Street.   Police say after getting shot, the victim knocked on someone's front door for help, but died on the porch.

Memphis police have not said what prompted the shooting, or if the shooter is in custody.

According to Memphis police the homicide stats are in line with last year's rate.

In 2013 there were a total of 21 homicides this time last year. This year there are twenty; that's one less.

Memphis police also tell us last year only 18 of those homicides were considered criminal or not domestic in nature. Something like a killing during a robbery or even a fight that resulted in death. This year that number is the same.

Memphis Police Director Tony Armstrong says, "We are not up statistically. The rising number is concerning and the number of homicides for 150 with 129 of those classified as criminal homicides." He went on to say that overall crime is down about eight percent compared to last year and with the implementation of several crime fighting initiatives they expect to see a bigger decrease in crime.
