Memphis squeaked by the lowly Temple Owls, winning 82-79 in overtime.

The Owls came in with only two conference wins and seven total on the season before putting a scare into the Tigers. Memphis led by double-digits in the first half and eight points at the break, but the Owls followed the hot shooting of Will Cummings to give Memphis all they could handle.

After a quiet couple of weeks, freshman Austin Nichols had arguably his best performance as a Tiger, with 17 points and 12 rebounds for his first double-double along with seven blocks. Shaq Goodwin led the Tigers with 20 points.

After trading the lead for much of the second half, Joe Jackson (12 points, 7 assists) put the Tigers up 74-71 with 1:43 left to play. But Dalton Pepper ended regulation by converting a jumper plus a free throw, and the two teams headed to overtime tied at 74.

Four different Tigers scored in overtime, and Michael Dixon hit two free throws to give them a three point lead with 17 seconds remaining, and Temple was unable to score after that point.

Cummings had 18 points in the first half and finished with 24 points on 10-21 shooting along with six rebounds, six assists and three steals. Dalton Pepper added 20 points and six rebounds and Quenton DeCosey also had 23 points for the Owls.

Memphis' next game is Thursday at Houston. The Tigers beat the Cougars 82-59 earlier this season.
