Young girl battling heart virus in need of blood donations

CHICAGO (FOX 32 News) -

Blood donations are down, and for one little girl that means a delayed recovery.

Seven year old Bella Rodriques is battling a heart virus that's kept her hospitalized at Lurie Children's Hospital.

"Right now Bella is doing the best that she has been for the past five weeks," said Bella's aunt Maria Cellini-Alberico.

While young Bella fights for survival, another battle is brewing – Chicago is facing a possible blood donation shortage.

"To watch her and see the doctors struggling to find blood to be able to support her and watching her stats go down because we're waiting because blood was delayed is a very scary experience," said Cellini-Alberico.

This weekend family members are hosting a Blood Drive for Bella in New Lenox, to help Bella and also help LifeSource replenish its inventory.

"Her blood type is O negative, but we're asking for all blood types," said Andrew McElroy, Director of Business Integrated Services at LifeSource.

McElroy said that would be donors couldn't make their appointments because of the recent extreme weather.

"We've had to cancel some drives because of school closings, church closings, business closings. So when we don't have that, hospitals don't close, accidents continue to happen, life continues to happen so surgeries still going daily so we need a daily supply, 365," said McElroy.

FOX 32 News went inside the blood lab at LifeSource where inventory is down 30%.

If donors don't step up, a crisis could be imminent.

"Possibly yes, but we we've seen our donors come through time and time again," said McElroy.

"I hope that people hear of this blood drive and their incited to action because it's not just Bella. There are other kids and adults that really require that as a fundamental element in their care," said Cellini-Alberico.
