OLIVE BRANCH, Miss. (FOX13) -

(Updated 2/25/14 at 11:16 a.m.)

The worst case of child abuse ever? That's how police in Olive Branch describe the condition of a child who died. Now the step-mom is set to face a judge for the first time.

Patricia Redmen is charged with capital murder of her two-year-old step-son.

She had only been married to his dad for two weeks when he was taken to the hospital with severe injuries all over his body.

The toddler was on life support for two days before he died.

FOX13 is following this story and will continue to bring you the latest developments as they come in.

A 2-year-old boy is dead and his 28-year-old stepmother is behind bars in Olive Branch. Police say it's one of the worst cases they've ever seen.

The 2-year-old boy died Jan. 22 after being taken off life support at Le Bonheur Children's Hospital in Memphis. OB Police said the toddler's injuries were so severe that there's no chance it was an accident.

Police said it's an ongoing investigation so they didn't release too much specific information at a press conference on Thursday morning.

"I went and reviewed the case and if it's not the worst, it's one of the worst I've seen in all my years, severe injuries," said Olive Branch Police Chief Don Gammage.

Gammage said Redmen turned herself in Thursday morning after an arrest warrant for capital murder was issued.

"I saw her briefly and she didn't have anything to say; she showed no remorse at all," said Chief Gammage.

Police say someone called 9-1-1 from the family's Olive Branch home . They say the 2-year-old boy was unresponsive and taken to Methodist Hospital first and then to Le Bonheur, where he was taken off life support two days later.

Police say he suffered significant and severe bodily injuries.

Just one week ago, a couple in Horn Lake was arrested after their 11-year-old son was found dead. Both facing capital murder charges as well.
