Apartment hunting in Fort Greene and beyond

Posted: Updated:
NEW YORK (MYFOXNY) -

Love may be the Brooklyn way. So are the now hip and cool neighborhoods to live in, like the tree-lined blocks and beautiful brownstones of Fort Greene. It has a lot of space and it's near Downtown Brooklyn, transportation, and the park. A lot of young professionals, artists, and families are relocating here. It's a hot market. Because of that, rental prices are going up.

Sarah Burke, director of sales for Douglas Elliman Real Estate in Brooklyn, says, for instance, $2,600 a month will get you a large pre-war one bedroom in a brownstone in Fort Greene, compared to, say, Bushwick where for the same price will get you a two-bedroom walkup.

This is a cool place to live. It has great bars and restaurants, and of course the beautiful brownstones. My cousin lives here. I'm looking too, since I have to be out of my apartment in the city April 1.

But there are other hot areas, including Williamsburg and Greenpoint, which have more luxury apartments and condos with much higher prices.

You can still find deals in Manhattan, such as on the Upper East Side, although the bargains are mostly by Second Avenue, where the subway construction is going on.

Let's not forget Queens (Astoria and Forest Hills) and parts of the Bronx and Staten Island that have good places to live.

It's a tough call. For now, I guess I'll just have to keep on looking.

Police say the two American flags swiped from the Brooklyn Bridge and replaced with faded white ones are back on U.S. soil. NYPD spokesman Sgt. Carlos Nieves said Friday that the flags are in the United States. He did not know their exact location. Two German artists claimed responsibility earlier this month for the July 22 stunt.

Out of over 500 hopefuls only a handful will join the Brooklyn Nets Kids Dance Team. The Nets held auditions this week at LIU Brooklyn. Adorable Bronx native Arielle was turned away last year but this time around she's made it through to the final round of the auditions. But even those who were on the team last year still have to try out.
