SHELBY COUNTY, Tenn. (FOX13) -

A rezoning plan for Shelby County schools is being presented Wednesday evening, along with the new list of proposed school closings.

Parents waiting to hear about school closings will have to wait another week to hear the final word.

Shelby County SChools Superintendent Dorsey Hopson told board members at a work session meeting Wednesday evening, he's still working on his final proposal.

At least one group of parents claimed victory. It's not quite what they wanted, but there is hope for parents and supporters of Westhaven Elementary.

Superintendent Hopson hinted he will recommend to the board next week keeping Westhaven Elementary open and building a new building to house the students of the school, along with students at Fairley and Rainshaven elementary schools.

It was just one of the many recommendations Hopson and board members discussed at the work session held at the SCS auditorium in Midtown Memphis. Still, the fate of 13 SCS schools is in question as Superintendent Hopson told board members he would present his final recommendations Tuesday, Feb. 25, at the board meeting.

Westhaven Elementary has been on the list of 13, mainly because of poor building conditions. Supporters of the school have argued closing Westhaven Elementary is not fair because the district did not maintain the building over the years as it should have.

Superintendent Hopson agreed with that statement and said Fairley Elementary School's building is also in poor condition and that it might serve the students at Westhaven, Fairley and Raineshaven best to merge the three schools and build a brand new school.

"When I say it was so wonderful to hear the superintendent wants to give us a new school, it was great," said Bridget Bradley, Westhaven Elementary PTO President. "I was elated. I can't even begin to express how I feel."

This is not Hopson's final proposal, so this is not a guarantee and the Shelby County Commission would have to approve building a new elementary school. Still, supporters of Westhaven Elementary are happy, at least for the night.

The list of potential school closings was not the only hot topic. Another issue that had generated a lot of interest was potential rezoning for next school year.

Superintendent Hopson has recommended the board hold five community meetings to take comments from parents before voting on any rezoning.
