Dramatic weight loss: 2 people lose a combined 240 pounds

Faltering a bit on your New Year's resolution?

Now is the time of year more people give up on a weight loss program because they just can't stay motivated.

"These are a size 32 and I would never thought I would fit in a size 32, that's a size 38," said Manny Mendoza.

"They are a size 20 and they gross me out," said Angela Cueto Salgado, who started losing weight about a year ago.

"I can't believe I was this size.. this is terrible," she said.

Angela lost 95 pounds -- going from a size 20 to a size 8.

"I was 237 pounds at my heaviest," she said.

In the last year as well, Manny lost 145 pounds.  He weighed 315 pounds.  Now he tips the scales at just 170.

"Before weight loss, I didn't have no confidence.  I made poor decisions about eating out all the time," he said.

Besides being big losers - of pounds that is, they both had one other thing in common.

"It's an amazing thing to see them progress so much over the past year," said Felicia Romero, a fitness trainer and nutritionist.

Romero clearly practices what she preaches because she has the body to prove it and the motivation to make it happen.

"The keys to their success was never giving up, knowing every day would be a struggle but they still struck true to what they set out to do," she said.

"My ground turkey, my almond milk and protein shakes," said Manny.

Dropping processed foods, sodas and sweets also made a big difference.

"Spinach.. you will see a lot of fruits down there, apples and carrots," said Manny.

"I juice every morning," said Angela, who decided she wanted a healthier lifestyle -- one that did not include medication for Lupus.

"I was taking almost nine and I take none now," she said.

But the turnaround for both came when they decided they had to be healthier for their families.  For Manny, it was his daughter.

"After I got with the program, she started to look up to me and started to be fit herself and that's one thing I'm really proud of," he said.

For Angela, it was her grand kids.

"I have two grand kids and a grandson who is coming soon," she said.

Both Angela and Manny were on the extremely overweight side -- they were obese.

For Romero, changing a life starts from within.

"If they don't have the internal motivation, they won't get there."

And it has to start slow.

"Start out with a plan, three or four times a week and slowly increase as the weeks go on."

The results come later.

"They are able to do a lot of things they were not able to do when we started," said Romero.

And her students have advice for anyone else who wants to make a change.

"Get up, move, do something," said Angela.

"Don't give up, don't give up -- just keep going.. if you had a bad day, get out of it and start over the next day and make better choices in life," said Manny.

Angela says losing weight and staying fit is a daily struggle.  But both get one cheat day per week.  For Manny, it's a big Mexican food dinner.
