Man donates to pay for Detroit police officer's daughter's prescriptions

A Detroit police officer's family was battling an insurance company, hoping to regain coverage for their infant daughter's prescription. But now the battle is over after an Ortonville man has donated thousands of dollars to the family to cover the cost of the medicine.

Brooklyn Neville was born prematurely and is at risk of contracting RSV, a respiratory virus that can be fatal for infants. Her dad's insurance covered the preventative monthly shots she received - until January.

Jason Neville requested a pharmacy appeal four times to CVS Caremark, but was denied every time.

The shot costs nearly three thousand dollars and Brooklyn has two remaining shots.

After seeing the story Tuesday morning, a FOX 2 viewer called hoping to donate to the family to cover the medicine. The man met the Nevilles and handed over the check later that day.

He told FOX 2's Randy Wimbley he felt compelled to donate because he shared something in common with Jason.

"My father was 25 years with the force. He's not with us now but he helped all he could, just like you," Kurt Helquist said to Jason. "When we're in trouble we call the police, but when the police need help [you've got to] step up."

CVS Caremark says an organization not affiliated with the company reviewed the Neville's many appeals and advised they be denied. The insurance company also says the medication the family wants is not recommended for a child Brooklyn's age, but her doctor disagrees and believes without the medication she's at serious risk of infection.

Jason has served 15 years on the police force. His insurance was changed to save money for the city of Detroit.
