Wounded Veterans Go On Deep Sea Fishing Trip

Posted: Updated:

Some wounded veterans in South Florida are getting the chance for some much needed rest and relaxation thanks to a deep sea fishing trip. FOX's Mike Dipasquale has that story.

"This is just awesome. A bad day of fishing steal beats a good day at the office," said Pat Corcoran.

"It just makes you feel alive again," said Sgt. Roberet Blumenburg. "I spent almost two years in the hospital and since then, it's been recovery, recovery, recovery.

Thanks to the Wounded Warrior Project, Blumenburg can began to move forward with his life. Three years ago, he stepped on an improvised explosive device in Afghanistan. He received a Purple Heart for still trying to help his fellow soldiers. His left leg is gone and his right leg and arm are severely damaged.

On Blumenburg's prosthetic leg, there is a sticker of a photo of his squad in Afghanistan. "This is my corspman," he said, pointing to he photo, "he pretty much saved my life."

Former Army Sgt. Maj. Pat Corcoran served in Afghanistan. In 2009, an IED blew up his armored vehicle. With no feeling in his lower body, Corcoran still tried to help others injured in the blast. He also received a Purple Heart and met President Barack Obama for his heroic actions.

"Sometimes it's unfortunate, the things that bring us together but the best thing that I've found to do is make the best of it," said Corcoran.

Corcoran and Blumenburg both share injuries like many Wounded Warrios and that alone is uplifting for Captain Vinnie Lasorda. "I'm like addicted to this, I feel so good afterward," said Lasorda. "Seeing their faces, when they catch a big fish, it's just a neat thing to witness; it's electric and I feel it."

The Wounded Warriors said the fishing experience has given them hope and happiness. "To me, that helps heal you from the inside out, in things that can't be solved with stitches," said Corcoran.

"You can't sit at your house all day, mulling over the same the stuff, living in a cocoon of darkness. You gotta go out there and live," said Blumenburg.
