Port Authority hero investigated in 'Bridge-gate' scandal

Posted: Updated:
NEW YORK (MYFOXNY) - Lieutenant Thomas Michaels of the Port Authority Police Department is a hero. Last November he convinced a teenage boy through Facebook and on the telephone not to jump off the George Washington Bridge.

Now Lieutenant Michaels is caught up in the investigation into the September George Washington bridge lane closures. Patrick Foye the Executive Director of the Port Authority has ordered an investigation of Lieutenant Michaels because he may have known in advance the lane closures would occur.

Lieutenant Michaels also apparently drove David Wildstein around Ft. Lee during the lane closures.

Wildstein is the former Christie appointee who carried out the lane closure orders.

Lieutenant Michaels may have also sent a text saying he could make this better. Why he did it is unclear.

Michaels is considered a family friend Governor Chris Christie.

But Lieutenant Michaels is respected by Port Authority Police as a no nonsense straight shooter. Sources say when his officers asked Lieutenant Michaels the reason for the closures he responded in frustration “I don't know, its BS, I am just following orders.”

It was Lieutenant Michaels, say sources, who had to deal with the monster traffic jams caused by the lanes closures. He is the one who came up with the detour trying to avoid the traffic caused when two of three lanes in Ft. Lee entering the bridge were closed for four days starting Sept 9th.

This involved making a nearly mile long circle going south on Hudson Terrace through Ft. Lee back to the center avenue entrance to the bridge.

Also as the daytime tour commander for the Port Authority police station by the bridge Lieutenant Michaels would, as standard procedure, be told of any lane closures several days before they occurred.
