Under pressure, Conn. state overtime pay on rise

Posted: Updated:

HARTFORD, Conn. (AP) - Overtime pay for Connecticut state workers has increased despite a goal set by Gov. Dannel P. Malloy to cut overtime spending by 10 percent.

Still, the Malloy administration has limited the rise in overtime costs over the last few budget years.

The Republican-American reports that a $12.8 million increase in Malloy's first year in 2011 was followed by smaller increases of $1.3 million in 2012 and $1.8 million last year.

State employees were paid nearly $795 million in overtime in the three years Malloy since took office in January 2011.

The Office of Policy and Management has established watch lists of employees whose earnings exceeded set thresholds and Malloy and state employee unions negotiated a two-year wage freeze for the 2012 and 2013 budget years.
