West Philadelphia -

A fire on the 5700 block of Poplar st. claimed the life of one woman on her second floor rear bedroom.

The fire was controlled within 30 minutes, but the 98-year-old woman, identified by her neighbors as Ann Williams, did not survive.

Williams lived in the home with her son, and was described as a "fixture on the block for decades." Her son returned home to the fire and tried to rescue his mom, but was unable to save her.

The cause of the fire is still unknown.
