Intern With Muscular Dystrophy Recognized For Her Inspiration To Police Department

Posted: Updated:

Veronica Aviles, an intern with the Midwest City Police Department and a student at the University of Central Oklahoma, is being honored by the Police Department for the daily inspiration she brings to work.

The internship has given Aviles both the opportunity to learn about her field and to teach her colleagues about her unique life being wheel-chair-bound since she was five years old due to having muscular dystrophy.

The criminal justice major was surprised by the offer from Chief Brandon Clabes.

"He just approached me... asked me what my major was and I told him and he said he has programs ... I didn't really think it was an actual offer," recalls Aviles

"She decided this career and anything we can do to make it possible for her," said Veronica's mom, Marie Aviles.

Chief Clabes is proud of Veronica Aviles and even calls her his hero.

"I'm going to say she probably is my favorite intern," said Clabes. "I [am] so happy when she comes through the doors."

"It's just kinda weird... Honestly I'm like any other college student going through the program," said Veronica Aviles, who has big plans going forward. "FBI is kinda the ultimate thing."

Veronica Aviles has been interning since January and, like most interns, she is looking for a job.
