PHOENIX (KSAZ) -

A nice Sunday afternoon quickly turned tragic in South Phoenix when a 7 year old boy on a scooter collided with a pickup truck. Despite life-saving efforts, the little boy died.

It happened in a neighborhood near 17th St. and Broadway. It was a nice, sunny day so there were a lot of kids in the area playing outside, including 7 year old Octavio Angulo.

Angulo was racing across the street on a scooter when he was hit by a pickup truck, he was not wearing a helmet.

"The mother I feel for her right now I really do, my heart goes out to her, I couldn't imagine going thru what she's going thru right now this is awful you know I feel butterflies right, now chills on my body," said neighbor Lepizie Morales.

Octavio was racing a cousin who was riding a bike.

An older kid was watching the group as they played. FOX 10 spoke with one of the kids who didn't want to be shown on camera. "I was taking care of the kids and a cousin of mine was playing races with him... I told him to slow down because the car was coming and I guess he wasn't listening and that happened."

Officer James Holmes with the Phoenix Police Department described the crash, 'The driver was going North on 17th street and the child was going East to West across the roadway I don't know how fast the child might have been going would that have allowed time for the driver to stop but again we have many witnesses."

Police say the 67 year old man behind the wheel stopped and tried to help as the boy's cousins watched the aftermath.

Octavio was rushed to the hospital, where he died a short time later.

"Kids are going to be out this is their time and enjoy themselves and a lot of times they have no fear when they're running and playing so we as citizens have to be careful also," said Holmes.

Octavio's family is seeking help for his funeral arrangements, if you'd like to help you can donate at any Chase Bank, reference account # 819828906.
