86-Year-Old Woman Dies In Springfield Fire

SPRINGFIELD TWP., Pa. -

Officials are investigating a deadly fire in Delaware County.

Investigators say an elderly woman was inside the burning home, but she wasn't able to get out.

Video caught giant ball of fire lighting up a Springfield neighborhood on the 300 block of East Leamy Avenue Saturday night.

Nikki Martin-Daly lives right next door but wasn't home at the time it broke out.

"It's scary when it's so close to your house, Martin-Daly said. "My sister called and said there's a huge fire next door. She had to run the kids out and go to a neighbor's house. "

Firefighters say the fire started on the first floor just before 8 pm. A neighbor was nearby moments after it sparked.

"It started off small and by the time you knew it progressed enormously. Vito Guardavaccaro, a neighbor said. "It was just black. You couldn't see inside. I stepped one foot in and it was like you were walking into the gates of you know. "

Police tell us an 86 year old woman wasn't able to escape. She was pronounced dead on scene.

Vito tried to save her.

"I tried everything I could to get inside the house. As soon as I opened the door and I tried to grab her but it was so intense," Vito said.

He believes the woman was the only one home.

Now the victim's family and the neighborhood are left with a burnt reminder of the devastation.

"Words can't explain the feeling you get when you're a witness to something and you know the person," Vito said.

Firefighters were able to put the fire out in under 30 minutes but the cold weather and snow made it challenging. A cause for the fire is still under investigation.
