CEO: Kickstarter crowd funding website hacked

The popular crowd-funding website Kickstarter sent an notice via e-mail to it's users Saturday about a security breach that happened on Wednesday.

Kickstarter CEO Yancey Strickler in the e-mail said, "hackers had sought and gained unauthorized access to some of our customers' data".

According to the company no credit card data was accessed but information including usernames, e-mail addresses, physical mailing addresses, encrypted passwords, and phone numbers were stolen.

The website offers project organizers to seek funds from members. Since the company launched in 2009 it has raised $981 million in funds for 56,300 projects. It boasts at having a membership of at least 5.6 million members.

Kickstarter's CEO did not say why the company waited until Saturday to announce the breach in security.
