Paul Bertelson owns the duplex at 2818 Colfax Avenue N., along with 20 other properties -- all rehabbed as part of his for-profit company, Mission Inc.
Last summer, housing inspectors found more than a dozen violations at the duplex, including smoke detectors that weren't working properly in both units. There was also a leaking tub, loose handrails, ceilings in bad shape and damage to the siding.
In August, the city of Minneapolis was even ready to condemn the property because there was no electricity, but records show all of those problems were fixed and inspectors issued a new rental license one week ago .
"It had just been inspected 6 months ago, city signed off on it with an improved rental licensing," Bertelson said.
Yet, a north Minneapolis neighborhood blog warns Paul Bertelson is a landlord who should be on the city's radar.
A city spokesperson told Fox 9 that Bertelson is not considered a problem landlord, and Bertelson himself told us he doesn't know about problems unless tenants tell him.
He said Troy Lewis was a good tenant, who had been deal a terrible hand.
"The husband -- quite tragic -- lost his wife 6 to 8 months before moving into the unit," Bertelson said.
