WASHINGTON (AP) — Metro has suspended most bus service, but Metrorail is running with all stations open.

Metro suspended bus service early Thursday because of hazardous road conditions. The agency says starting at 2 p.m. Thursday, limited bus service on certain major roadways will return in the District of Columbia, Maryland and Virginia. The agency says it expects limited service through Thursday.

Metro says on its Twitter account that trains are running every six to 10 minutes — not because there are lots of riders, but because it's the best way to keep snow down.

Metro says if the snow reaches a height of eight inches near the third rail it may be necessary to suspend service above ground. Metro operates below ground in much of downtown Washington.
