Arizona casting director sends actors on their way to success

Posted: Updated:

Hollywood is the filmmaking capital of our country, but it turns out that Phoenix is a promising launching pad for acting success.

Thousands of roles for film and television projects get filled right here in our state by local talent.

"I don't believe in luck, I believe in hard work," said Faith Hibbs-Clark, a casting director who says it pays off on the big screen, in movies like "The Help."

"A little girl named Emily Stone walked into my office and she was bubbly and cute and so grown up for a little person," she said.

That little girl grew up to be Emma Stone -- star of "The Help" and the upcoming "Spider-Man" movie.  She was raised in Scottsdale, taking roles at the Valley Youth Theatre.  Faith gave her one-on-one acting lessons at her home in the 1990s.

"I just knew and you do know that there is this certain quality about them that's gonna go further than others," said Faith.

Garrett Hedlund starred in "Tron: Legacy" and played Gwenyth Paltrow's love interest in "Country Strong," but his career began by filling a role Faith was casting right here in Arizona.

"You talk about charisma, that guy had charisma out his ears.. he was so charming and charismatic, it was ridiculous," she said.

15 years into running her business, Good Faith Casting, Faith is the only working casting director in Arizona, recognized by the Casting Society of America.  In 2013, she found actors for two feature films and 48 commercials projects in our state.

"I think that for this particular role, he might be just a little too cute," she said.

Right now, she's searching for the face of a Team USA public service announcement.  She pours over hundreds of headshots with her assistant and daughter Bella Hibbs.  They'll bring 40 boys in to audition.

The project's director will call 10 actors back for a closer look, but only one will land the part, plus the paycheck and national exposure that comes with it.

"You are the man, you are the bomb, you are going to walk the walk of a winner," said Faith.

She gives the actors guidance, setting them up for success.

Faith believes that while there isn't as much work in Phoenix as there is in Los Angeles, there's still great opportunity for actors because there's less competition for every role.  Seeing the success that began in our state energizes young actors.

"I feel like I'm gonna be like a big star," said Jax Carrillo, age 9.

"I'm gonna end up being a movie star.  I'm just a small beginning, but I might be big at the end," said Maddox Eccleston.

They're not movie stars, but Faith provides another important element of movie making -- extras.  In the past few years, she's filled thousands of spots in movies like "Take Me Home Tonight" with a party scene in Scottsdale and she recruited the actors who played victims of piranha attacks at Lake Havasu for the film "Piranha 3-D."

One of her first casting experiences proved to be unforgettable.

"One of my first jobs as a casting assistant was on "Jarhead" and I got to sit in a tent down in Yuma auditioning good looking military men with their shirts off, so that was an interesting day's work," she said.

No matter which part they land, the Arizona film market offers enough work to bring an actor lifelong success.

"This is a wonderful place to film and there's always gonna be great projects here and great work to be had for myself and actors looking to establish their acting career," said Faith.

In her career, Faith has filled parts for more than 50 feature films in Arizona.

Faith  fears that scammers can use her company's name to target up and coming actors, so she recommends working with a reputable talent agent.
