The story behind 'Mr. New York'

Posted: Updated:
NEW YORK (MYFOXNY) - Master builder/realtor Lewis Rudin had a big role in creating Manhattan as it looks today. His son, Bill Rudin recently reflected on his dad as a new book by author Seymour Lachman is chronicling Rudin's enduring legacy.

The story picks up when New York City was on the brink of collapse.

The Big Apple was on the verge of bankruptcy and the federal government said it would not bail out the city. The infamous headline in the NY Daily News said it all: 'Ford to City: Drop Dead."

Rudin was one of the instrumental people who helped keep it alive.

"My dad and other civic minded people came together and created this public-private partnership. They realized that government could not solve education issues, crime issues, transportation issues, affordability issues. They got everybody together- the unions, the business people; the not for profits, the government-- they didn't always agree on everything, but they had a tremendous amount of influence turning this city around," said Rudin.

Among his creative visions for saving NYC, Rudin and others pre-paid their taxes as a bridge loan to the city.

"If that hadn't happened I don't think we all would be sitting here in this great city that we love," said Rudin.

Today, the Rudin family is owner of 10 million feet of office space and four million feet of apartments.

"We give back to our community. We try to enhance our community. That's what my dad taught us. He was a great guy. He really spent 24/7 caring about this city," said Rudin.
