Detroit priest charged with embezzling from charity

Posted: Updated:
DETROIT (WJBK) -

A Detroit Catholic priest has been charged with stealing money from an organization that was designed to help the poor.

Father Timothy Kane, 57, faces six felony counts.

He and an accomplice, Dorreca Brewer, are accused of defrauding an Archdiocese program known as the "Angel Fund." The program has granted $17 million to needy individuals and families in Detroit, Hamtramck and Highland Park since its founding. It is funded by a single, anonymous source.

Kane and Brewer were arraigned side-by-side on Wednesday. Kane turned himself in, while Brewer was already in police custody.

Wayne Co. Prosecutor Kym Worthy says Kane and his accomplice approved false applications to the fund and pocketed thousands of dollars over a four-year period. The amount of money alleged to have been taken is unknown, but the embezzlement charges are for less than $20,000.

The Archdiocese has been working with the Wayne Co. Prosecutor's Office on the investigation since 2012.

Ned McGrath, the church's Director of Communications, released a statement:

"We are extremely disappointed and discouraged that a generous source of support for those in dire need in the inner city, an effort known as the Angel Fund, could possibly fall victim to fraud by a member of our own clergy."

The relationship between Brewer and Kane is unknown at this time.

Kane has no prior felony record. Brewer has a history of racketeering, fraud and larceny.
