SHELBY COUNTY, Tenn. (FOX13) -

A plan to give Shelby County Schools board members a $20,000 raise is on hold for now, until May.

It's a pay raise for politicians, in an election year: all politics.

The county commission gets to set the pay for the county school board, which hasn't been touched for decades.

At present the school board earns $4,200 a year but Commissioner Mike Ritz wants to raise that to $25,000 per board member.

Commissioner Ritz said voting after the May 6 primary election May makes commissioners more inclined to say yes.

"It's a little antiquated," he said. "I think it's totally unfair. We've got some really good people on the school board. We need to be sure we keep them."

"You've got a school system that is losing one-third of its students, one-third of its buildings," Commissioner Chris Thomas said. "They just came out with a $24 million deficit. I just don't hear the public thinking its a good idea. And its an election year."

Several sitting commissioners will not be seeking re-election this year.
