ROCKPORT, Mass. (FOX29) - -

A high school principal banned yoga pants this week, saying that they are not part of the school's dress code.

At a recent staff meeting at Rockport High School, faculty members expressed concern that students were not complying with the dress code policy in the student handbook. The school's dress code specifically bans leggings.

At a scheduled student assembly this past week, the principal reminded students of the dress code. During the assembly, some male students were told to leave for misbehavior.

Then on Friday, more than 20 students were sent home to change their clothes, and some were written up with a warning for wearing yoga pants or leggings to school.

Superintendent Rob Liebow supports the principal in his decision to address the situation. The policy is firmly in place for students to adhere to, he said.

Senior Aidan Wright was one of the students written up for wearing yoga pants.

"I just don't think anyone would have looked at my outfit and felt like I was dressing in a way that was inappropriate for school," Wright said.

She and other female students feel they're being targeted for no reason, and they don't understand why yoga pants are suddenly such a problem.

"It's called attention to something that no one even thought about," student Katharine Boucher said.

Parents say they aren't getting much of an explanation about this from the school, but think there are more important things for the principal to be worrying about than girls wearing yoga pants.

Parent Janine Boucher said, "I just think it's absolutely ridiculous, there's no reason for this to have been blown out of proportion. This is crazy, these poor kids."
