A Criminal Court jury has convicted a Memphis man of first-degree murder in the 2010 strangulation death of his girlfriend whose body was hidden in a motel room for some six weeks before it was discovered, Shelby County Dist. Atty. Gen. Amy Weirich said Monday.

Lakeith Moody, 38, was automatically sentenced to life in prison after the verdict Sunday involving the death of 28-year-old Sony Millbrook.

Her family reported her missing on Jan. 27, 2010, after she was last seen alive in room 222 of the Budget Lodge at 1533 E. Brooks Road.

Assistant district attorneys Missy Branham and Marianne Bell told jurors that Moody strangled Millbrook with a cord and hid her body under the mattress and box spring in a metal frame on the floor.

The room was rented to several customers in the following weeks, but despite their complaints of a foul odor the victim's body was not discovered until March 15.

Moody, the father of four of Millbrook's five children, was arrested several weeks later in her car.

The case was tried before Judge Carolyn Wade Blackett.

Prosecutors Branham and Bell are members of the district attorney's Domestic Violence Prosecution Unit.

The DVPU handles felony cases of domestic assault and homicide committed by intimate partners. The unit also works closely with the Shelby County Family Safety Center to address the needs of domestic violence victims and their families.
