Hero award winner helps out at a special needs classroom

PHOENIX (KSAZ) -

The "hero awards" for local animals were recently announced and FOX 10 caught up with one of the winners at a valley school.

Kids in the reading corner at Sequoia Charter School in Mesa read to each other but most of them read to Butch the dog.

Butch is a beloved dog in the school's special needs classroom. "I think that what Butch has done with the kids helps them with their self esteem, their confidence and they are a lot happier," said Debbie Dunn.

That's one of the reasons Debbie Dunn brings him to her classroom, the other reason the dog was abused and neglected and needed care.

Butch had a lot of recovery and he needed help day and night the only way to do that was bring him into the classroom, he is here every school day and the kids like having him around.

"We like to pet Butch and we like to play with him," said Stephanie Ruiz.

Butch was picked as this year's service hero dog for his service. "He's a dog who would have been discarded in so many areas. He is a pit bull, he was abused, and look what he is doing for these kids," said Leanna Taylor with Friends of Animal Care & Control.

Butch does not know he is a hero dog but he does know he is loved.
