Chatham twins receive full-ride scholarships to UChicago

CHICAGO (FOX 32 News) -

Twin sisters from the Chatham neighborhood got some news Friday that will change their lives.

Aliyah and Olivia Singleton are seniors at University of Chicago Charter Woodlawn High School.

They got the news during a weekly pep rally, part of the school's aggressive focus on going to college.

An honor so nice, it was given out twice.

The Singleton twins will be together four more years, thanks to a very generous scholarship to one of the nation's best schools.

Olivia and Aliyah were accepted to the University of Chicago on full ride scholarships.

The girls celebrated with hugs to each other, then to mom and grandma. This is the day these twins only hoped for.

"We were accepted into the University of Chicago on the spot and it was a big surprise and we didn't even know until this morning," Aliyah.

Just like the other graduating seniors at their school, UChicago Charter, Friday was supposed to be just "another" high five day.

High Five days are where seniors who received their college acceptance letter are called to the stage in front of the entire student body to be celebrated. They announce the school they're attending and be congratulated by their peers.

Everybody was in on Olivia and Aliyah's surprise, except them.

"We didn't even know until we saw--our mom and our grandma we figured it was some type of surprise but we didn't know it was going to be this big and shocking," Aliyah said.

"We worked really hard. I mean we've been consist since freshman year and so, basically our hard work actually paid off and we got into one of the best schools in the country which is amazing," Olivia said.

School officials said days and event like this promote a "college culture."

At this school in Woodlawn, from the sixth grade a higher education is expected, and celebrated.
