GERMANTOWN, Tenn. (FOX13) -

Americans spend thousands of dollars every year to remove squirrels from their attics.

But the Kalsi family of Germantown not only took one in. The squirrel is now living in harmony with another family pet - their hamster.

"I thought it was a rat but it was actually a squirrel," said Sophia Kalsi.

"They really like each other," added Katie Kalsi. "It's funny! They got a nice little nest up there."

That's right. Hammy the Hamster and Nutty the Squirrel are living together inside what used to be Hammy's hamster house. Although he may be from the same family, you never know how well family members will get along.

"Nutty can jump like you would not believe!," Sophia said. "You got to watch out. See his big squirrel eyes?"

"They got out for about a day and a half," added Carl Kalsi, father. "Had no idea where they were and then the first one to come back was Hammy the Hamster. Just came scurrying up. It was time to eat, I guess. I just picked him up put him in the cage. The squirrel I did not find till the next morning. He was upstairs in my closet, up on my hangers over my clothes. So, had to close the closet, get a ladder, and was able to corral him."

At first, Hammy and Nutty would fight at meal time. But since the Kalsi family started dropping in acorns for Nutty -- who loves them, and Hammy could care less about acorns -- the two live pretty much in peace.

But one day in the not too distant future it will be time for Nutty to go back to nature. The question is, once a squirrel gets a taste of the good life can you keep it from coming back for more?
