CHICAGO (FOX 32 News) - -

Law enforcement officials report the five-day-old baby they were searching for Thursday night has been found alive and in good condition outside a gas station in eastern Iowa.

Town of Beloit Police Chief Steven Kopp says the nearly week-old baby was discovered around 10:15 a.m. Friday by the police chief in West Branch, Iowa. He and other officers had been checking areas along Interstate 80 for the child.

The chief heard the newborn crying and discovered the child swaddled in blankets inside a tote bag outside a gas station, FBI acting special agent G.B. Jones said at Friday's news conference.

"Our efforts are clearly focused on reuniting mother and child and the rest of the family members with the child. That's the immediate focus. In fact we're taking steps right now to make sure that happens," Jones said.

Rock County Sheriff Robert D. Spoden said investigators identified a travel route of a person who had left the home early Thursday and searched along that route.

FOX 6 in Milwaukee reported Kayden Powell went missing from a relative's home on Homeland Court around 4:30 a.m. Thursday.

The mother reported the baby missing early Thursday morning when she woke and found his bassinet empty.

Kopp said the baby's mother was home, along with the baby's father, uncle and great-grandmother when the child went missing. Kopp said that no others were in the home for 12 hours prior to child's existence, FOX 6 reported.

Police were not calling anyone in the home a suspect Thursday night, but they say they were obviously concerned about Kayden's safety in the bitter cold weather.

Powell was described as 20 inches long and just over six pounds. Those with information that may have helped investigators were urged to call 608-364-2984.
