TURRELL, Ark. (FOX13) -

The Arkansas Department of Health has issued a Boil-Water Alert for the entire water system in Turrell, Ark.

This order was issued as a precaution because it is possible that contaminated water may have entered the distribution system as a result of a partial loss in normal system pressure.

All affected customers are advised that the water may be unsafe for human consumption, and water used for drinking or food preparation must be boiled briskly for one minute prior to use.

All ice cubes should be discarded and only boiled water used for making ice.

This notice will be lifted by the Arkansas Department of Health when 1 set of bacteriological samples indicate that the water is free from contamination and an adequate disinfectant level is established throughout the distribution system.

Turrell's 600 residents have lost power from a heavy ice storm this week. Heavy icing on trees and powerlines that began Sunday has led to the closings of a school and businesses. Some residents of Turrell, 16 miles across the state line from Memphis, say the prospects of power being restored by the end of the week appear bleak.

In an e-mail to FOX13 news Crittenden County Judge Woody Wheeless said the town of Turrell needs to boil their water until further notice in the wake of the ice storm that knocked out power throughout the town. Judge Wheeless said the water system in Turrell has been down for over 24 hours.

"Arkansas Rural Water Association has brought an emergency generator to the city and has hooked it to the pumping station," the judge said. "At this time the pumping station is frozen and the city is attempting to though it out and it may take several hours."
