Posted: Updated:
GLENDALE, Ariz. -

A busy parking lot turned into a crime scene Thursday morning after Glendale Police officers opened fire on a suspect. The suspect was hit and rushed to a nearby hospital with the shooting taking place in a busy area with several stores nearby.

From Skyfox video you can see the bullet holes in the suspect's truck. "Probably 15 shots I would guess," said Eric Jones, a witness to the shooting.

Jones was in his car when he heard and saw the detectives unmarked cars box in the truck. "And then the gunfire started and I spilled coffee all over myself I got out and got on the ground, I was scared," said Jones.

Before the gunshots and while the truck was boxed in police say the suspect hit the gas but couldn't get away. "We saw smoke coming from a truck or a van and next thing you know we saw cops coming through the parking lot," said Catherine, another witness.

The undercover officers were part of Glendale's fugitive task force. Those officers and two U.S. Marshals who were assigned to the task force were searching for a 43 year-old suspect on an outstanding felony warrant. The found him in the busy parking lot Thursday morning and decided to move in for the arrest.

Vee wood works nearby and also saw the shooting, "I was helping a customer. She said oh fireworks and I said oh no those are gunshots".

She's one of many workers and customers in the busy shopping center when this shot rang out around 10:45 Thursday morning. "I had my girlfriend here with my 3 month old baby and it kind of scared me a bit." said Chris Matthias.

Police insist they take civilian safety seriously And given the circumstances, they had to make a move. Tracey Breeden with the Glendale police department explained why officers made the choice to open fire. "He was using his vehicle to ram their vehicles in an attempt to escape if you let them flee there is a chance that they can get away and there is chance they could harm somebody and flee".
