GERMANTOWN, Tenn. (FOX13) -

Germantown Municipal Schools are getting ready for the 2014-15 school year by trying to recruit teachers and students.

Superintendent Jason Manuel asked parents Monday evening at Houston High School who live in that community to consider transferring their children from Shelby County Schools to the new municipal school district.

It might be a good deal due to the empty classroom space as GMS wants to fill them with students who live in that particular community.

If their parents wish Superintendent Manuel said there is room for hundreds of Germantown students to leave the SCS system in August and enroll in the new muni district in Germantown. The offer is also extended to teachers at Germantown high, middle and elementary schools.

"We're going to have actually a letter of intent for teachers," Superintendent Manuel said. "If you choose to come here, you can continue in the exact same role. We have a natural attrition that normally happens with teacher who are going to retire or move to different places and we may have an increase in student capacity. So we are going to have some openings for other teachers who choose to come here, too."

Teachers can apply for vacant positions at one of the five municipal schools. Manuel said the new district is out for recruiting the best.

"I don't think it is a matter of recruiting the best teachers," he said.

Other similar events will be held at other municipal schools in Germantown to showcase the programs for students, parents, and teachers.
