Bret Michaels helps patient at Barrow Neurological Institute

PHOENIX (KSAZ) -

An Arizona man has an interesting connection with valley rocker Bret Michaels -- they both received treatment at Barrow Neurological Institute together.

With a special talent, a cat helps detect when Glen Schallman is having a brain seizure.

"Booboo started coming up to me, checking my pulse at my artery and if I was going to have a seizure even an hour before I would go into a seizure, she would nudge me with her head," said Schallman.

Schallman has three cats who are therapy animals.  The 54-year-old was treated at Barrow Neurological Institute at St. Joseph's Hospital with Michaels.  He also attended a gala with Michaels at the Barrett- Jackson Auto Show.

"He invited me to go to the Barrett- Jackson concert.. there on stage, he would be singing and it was wonderful and we got to know each other," said Schallman.

It was a special treat for Glen.  At 54, he's the oldest living survivor of two types of brain tumors that give him headaches and fatigue, which leads to his body eventually shutting down.  Being treated at Christmas wasn't easy, but a special gift from Michaels really made his holiday.

"I was in shock.. happiest day of my whole entire life.. the best Christmas I have ever had," he said.

Because Schallman is on disability, he can't afford to give his cats everything they need to live day to day, including veterinary bills.  He's working with different charities to help him out.
