Firefighters Scramble to Battle Three Big Fires Within Hours In Trenton

Posted: Updated:

It took every firefighter and piece of firefighting equipment in Trenton to battle three multi-alarm fires that broke out in the capital city Thursday, leaving the fire director shaking his head.

"I've been here 30 years. Many years ago this would take place, but it's the first time in a long time we've had this type of situation," said Fire Director Qareeb Bashir.

The biggest fire of the day was a five-alarmer that brought dozens of firefighters to this abandoned warehouse on Taylor Street. They spent several hours battling the blaze inside the 121,000 square foot warehouse. Firemen scrambled to keep the flames away from an adjoining furniture warehouse and these homes just up the block. It's the second suspicious fire here in two months.

"We're worried right and I thank God it wasn't cold and the wind wasn't blowing," said Barbara Leach who lives across the street.

"They're putting us in harm's way," resident Valarie Carter told Fox 29.

Neighbors say something more has to be done to prevent fires at the warehouse. They say squatters and homeless people can be seen going in and out of the block long structure, endangering their homes.

"The sparks from the last one, it was coming over the houses. These are old houses. Hello," Carter added.

A few blocks away, fire raced through six apartments in two homes on Monmouth Street. The first responding fire crews came from nearby Delran, Hamilton and Beverly. Those fire companies came to lend a hand as Trenton coped with three fires within hours. Samuel Hodge lived in the home where the fire started.

"I thank God that we all got out safe man, hadn't been for the lord we probably would have never made it out," Samuel Hodge told Fox 29...

"They said the whole building was destroyed so I don't know what's going to happen with the people who live there," another woman said.

Less than a mile away on Centre Street, a two alarm fire also raced through this row home, gutting the place and damaging two adjacent homes. The fire marshal was on the scene at all three fires.

"It will be investigated," Fire Director Bashir said.

"We all made it out safe and I thank God," Hodge said.

The cause and origin of all three fires are still under investigation. Three people were taken to the hospital with minor injuries at the Monmouth Street fire scene.

Director Bashir said fire companies from at least a dozen towns from New Jersey and Pennsylvania came to Trenton to help the city fire department battle the three fires.
