Four injured in crash along I-10 near 59th Avenue

PHOENIX (KSAZ) -

Four people, including three children, were hurt after a crash along Interstate 10 near 59th Avenue Wednesday and the scene brought traffic to a crawl toward the end of rush hour.

The crash happened on the off-ramp just before 7 p.m., and prompted Department of Public Safety officers to shut down the two right lanes of westbound I-10.

According to DPS, a white Jeep was stopped at the red light at the off-ramp when it was rear-ended by a black sedan which failed to stop.  Two women and three children were inside that sedan.

The children and one woman were transported to a nearby hospital with minor injuries.  The driver of the Jeep was able to walk away from the crash.

Arizona Department of Transportation officials said traffic along the I-10 was backed up for quite a while.  Luckily, it didn't last long -- the road was back open a few hours later.

DPS is still investigating what caused the crash, but they believe it may have been a case of distracted driving.

No names have been released in this case.
