Blind father and son bond over watching Seattle Seahawks

CHICAGO (FOX 32 News) -

A lot of fathers and sons bond over their favorite sports team.

But this Super Bowl will be extra special for a suburban father who's a die-hard Seattle Seahawks fan and also legally blind.

FOX 32's Craig Wall has the story of a team approach to watching football.

This is more than a story of a father and son enjoying watching the game together. This is a son who helps bring the game alive for his dad.

Val Chavez is a major Seahawks fan. He has been since his army days when he was stationed in Washington, and Seattle joined the NFL, in 1976.

But what he's really been cherishing these past three years is enjoying Seahawks games with his son Luis.

Val is legally blind.

"I can listen to the announcer, I can listen to the analyst describe every thing but it's a little bit different when your son's there telling you," Chavez.

The Chavez's gladly re-watched the fourth quarter of Seattle's win over San Francisco in the NFC Championship game.

Giving us a glimpse of their play on play-by-play.

"Keep in mind he's not a professional, he just does his best and tries to help me out. And I kinda fill in the blanks and try to picture it in my mind," Val Chavez said.

"It's kinda the one thing I have that my other siblings don't have, it's a love for the Seahawks. And I think it really has improved our relationship, we're closer because of the team. To watch it together is always a good father son bonding moment," Luis Chavez said.

During replays Val gets right up next to the TV and can sort of see what's happened.

Val's reaction the first time Luis did this is what started the tradition.

"I saw a smile, big smile for me," Luis said.

They will be watching the Super Bowl with other family members at a Seahawks backers bar in Chicago. Luis knows he'll have to step up his game, or at least his volume.

"If the other fans yell loud, I'll yell louder and just get my dad some help with that," Luis said.

Val is expecting a great time and a victory.

Oh and by the way he's predicting a Seahawks victory.
